Title:
The New Light and Shadow of Coal City
News Summary:
After the film Welcome to Long Restaurant—directed by Wen Muye and starring Shen Teng—became a hit, the Shitankjing Industrial Cultural‑Tourism Film Town in Dawaokou District, Shizuishan City, Ningxia quickly caught public attention. Most of the war‑time memories and exotic scenery shown in the movie were filmed on the old streets and abandoned factories of this former mining district.
Shitankjing rose because of coal; at its peak about 130,000 people lived there. When the resources ran out, the population left and the factories shut down. The local authorities chose to preserve the intact mining heritage sites and to push ecological restoration. In recent years they have invited film productions, trained local extras, and improved supporting services, gradually turning the “coal city” into a “film city.” About 170,000 visitors come each year, and many movies and TV shows have used the town as a location.
Reflection and Insight:
The transformation of Shitankjing reminds us that patient, honest work in everyday life can turn old burdens into new possibilities. Keeping memory alive, healing the environment, and building industry are not overnight miracles; they depend on neighbors helping one another, on government and market working together, and on a deep sense of responsibility toward the land and its history.
A simple, timeless saying teaches us to do everything wholeheartedly—seeing our work as a duty to the Lord—so that we care for today’s people and leave a steadier path for future generations.
Scripture:
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as if you were working for the Lord, not for people.” Colossians 3:23
